How we work
DSW helps people in developing countries avoid unwanted pregnancies and protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. Informing young people about sexuality and contraception is the core of most of our projects.

DSW promotes development projects in countries, which have a high need for family planning, sexual education and other services related to reproductive health. Thereby the foundation works together with national and local partner organisations and foundations. On the ground support and monitoring of DSW’s country programmes in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania is provided by DSW’s offices in the respective countries.

There is a high demand for sexual and reproductive health education for youth in these countries. At the same time, there is a clear lack of corresponding knowledge on how to approach and inform young people on these sensitive issues. To meet this need, DSW set up two training centres in Kampala (Uganda) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), where we can equip youth-serving organisations with all the skills they need to answer young peoples’ questions related to health, sexuality and contraception. These centres are supported by the German women’s clothes chain BONITA GmbH & Co. KG.

Awareness raising, advocacy and policy work

Through its active awareness raising and advocacy work DSW also informs people in Germany about the connection between population development, poverty and health. DSW wants to motivate other organisations, as well as private individuals and entrepreneurs, to play an active role.

Furthermore, DSW seeks to engage both corporate and political actors to ensure that sexual and reproductive health education and contraception is strengthened in developing countries. DSW’s regional centre in Baden-Wuerttemberg carries out fundraising and media activities in southern Germany.

DSW is a member of many German and international networks, such as the Association of German Development Non-Governmental Organisations (VENRO) and the Action Alliance against AIDS. As a result, DSW’s concerns are heard, both in Germany and on international platforms.

DSW’s International Affairs Office in Brussels maintains close ties to the European Commission (EC), an important donor in the area of development assistance. DSW’s staff also liaise with members of the European Parliament, as well as with representatives from other international and non-governmental organisations.
